Morbid Obesity

Definition, Causes, Health Threats of Morbid Obesity!
By Dr John Anne

Definition

Morbid obesity is a clinically severe obesity or extreme obesity; it is a chronic disease. If compared with Alzheimer's disease it is over twice the size of the total population with Alzheimer's disease. There are a large number of people caused by this disease. For example, if the entire morbidly obese population lived in one state, it would be the 12th state in population. The health effects that are attached with morbid obesity are numerous and can be disabling. Sometimes, individuals with morbid obesity suffer with more than one health effect. It creates a situation that can shorten life span and negatively impact quality of life.

Causes

Contributing Factors: The exact causes of severe obesity are still unknown. There are many factors that can contribute in the development of obesity and that are genetic, hereditary, environmental, and metabolic and eating disorders. There are also certain medical conditions that may result in obesity like intake of steroids and hypothyroidism.

Genetic Factors: Many surveys conclude that genes play an important role in your tendency to gain excess weight. The bodyweight of adopted children shows no correlation with the body weight of their parents, who feed them and teach them how to eat. The weight concerned with their genetic parents.

Environmental Factors: Some of the environmental factors are eating fast food, long days sitting at a desk.

Surgery for morbid obesity

Very few people can be unaware that being overweight is a bad thing. It contributes to a range of conditions most of us that we would wish to avoid, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis, and asthma. Diet and regular practice of exercise are the obvious ways that can help in that condition. In some cases anti-obesity drugs can also prove helpful.

Health Threats

If your weight is more than twice you may have double the risk of early death Person having diabetes or heart attack may have 5-7 times greater risk of death.

Causes of Morbid Obesity!
By Dr. Mark Clayson

How does obesity occur? The reasons are complex. Despite popular opinion, morbid obesity is not purely the result of eating too much. According to recent studies, it has been found that cases of morbid obesity are often rooted in genetic causes. If this holds true in an individual’s case, then dieting and exercise will have limited effects on the problem.

Scientific research in to the causes and cure for morbid obesity continues to be conducted all over the world. But until we gain a firmer grasp on all the implications of the disease, it is something that patients simply have to deal with and work on, oftentimes for their entire lives. Medical science has come up with numerous interventions, including surgery, but these are not cures for obesity – rather they provide relief for the physical strain and consequences that come from being excessively overweight.

We do not know what extreme obesity is caused by. Instead of there being one cause, it usually comes about as the result of several different factors, including diet, environment, genetics, heredity, and metabolism. Hypothyroidism and steroid intake are two medical conditions that might result in excessive weight gain or obesity.

Children whose parents are obese have a much greater chance of becoming obese themselves. Perhaps this has to do with genetic factors, but more often than not, it has to do with the family’s sedentary lifestyle and eating habits. If parents do not take proper care of themselves, then their children can be born obese.

There are additional, environmental, factors that cause and maintain obesity.
